Katahdin (translating to “Great Mountain”) is a factious community set in the Appalachian Mountains near Mt. Katahdin in Maine. The community values family, music, and human connections deeply. The community runs on its own currency, not USD due to their isolation and off the grid style of living. The currency uses elements of mountains, campfires, music, and instruments to demonstrate their environment and values. The main language through the money is musical elements. The beats are used to symbolize a numeric value. The “one beat” symbol for the bill and the “half beat” imagery for the coin. The coins resemble guitar picks and have a pattern mirroring the rim of guitar holes. Classic quotes read on both currency designs which tie back to their family and musical core beliefs. The two serial numbers appearing on the bill come from the coordinates and altitude of Mt. Katahdin. The blue and brown colors represent the blending of the land and sky. The quotes and all elements are very important and symbolic to the Katahdin people.
